Hysteria:
Visual Text Exercise
Find an image from the internet that represents the
spreading of hysteria (exaggerated
or uncontrollable emotion or excitement, especially among a group of people).
Explain how the picture represents hysteria or hysterical actions. Here is an
example:
1) Find an image.
2) Post it to the blog.
3) Create a citation giving credit to the image.
4) Write a response (not on the blog) and submit it to Mr. Marquart.
5) Comment on at least two other images.
Ensure you are respectful and constructive in your comments. Comments like "Go team" or "Marquart wuz here" do NOT meaningfully contribute to the discussion. Use the below sentence starters to assist you:
Strength- Start your comment with an area of strength, discuss something that the blogger
did well.
I really liked ____________ because __________.
My favourite part of your image was _____________ because ___________.
I enjoyed this image about ________________ because ______________.
Your image is really interesting. It made me think about . . .
This reminds me of another film/a Youtube video/a book/a song/an article because . . .
Stretch- In the second part of your comment, focus on a topic that might stretch the
blogger’s thinking, and encourage the conversation to continue.
I had a question about your image . . .
Could you tell me more about . . .The image made a strong impact on me because...
The image could be better related to hysteria because...
Sample Analysis of Image:
The image represents hysteria, as a person, such as this girl, may not have planned on being involved in the chaos and violence after a hockey game, but she obviously is. Hysteria makes normal people act abnormally. The picture represents hysteria because, ironically, the girl looks sweet and innocent, but she is obviously posing for a picture during the Vancouver hockey riots in 2011. Although the viewer doesn't know for certain what, if anything, she did during the riots, posing during such violence and destruction seems to condone the chaos around her. What the viewer does know is that she took the time to pose for this picture and posted it to social media. This speaks to a lack of intelligence, as potential employers, for example, may think that she is guilty by association and this action may have long term effects for her.

The analysis would
continue from here contrasting the foreground (her facial expression, posture,
and the vibrant colour or her jersey) with the background (trash, fire, black
smoke and dozens of unidentifiable people).
